Girls Volleyball Season Highlights
The James Rutter Girls volleyball team had another memorable season in the fall of 2009 as they finished with the league’s 2nd best record at 9-3. This is a particularly impressive feat as the entire team had little or no competitive volleyball experience coming into the season. Only two of the girls, Captains Jeslyn Vang and Lauren Oliver, were returning 8th graders who had played last year. The other 8th graders included: Destiny Ostorgia, Tiana Hairston, Alexis Enriques, Jennifer Ha, Allison Oleas and Kathleen Langrin, who were all on the team for the first time. They were joined by six promising 7th graders: Tiana Foster, Lisseth Corral, Clarissa Pacheco, Alainna Barros-Lavoie, Leajanea Bruley-Shepherd and ‘prodigy’ Diamond Gear. At the awards banquet in late October, four players were awarded with special honors. 7th grader Tiana Foster received the ‘Most Improved Player’ award. She was one of the hardest workers on the team, and Tiana developed into one of the team’s strongest servers and became a consistent hitter and middle blocker as well. Destiny Astorgia received the ‘Coaches award’ for her positive attitude, her energy, enthusiasm, and effort. She goes crazy when they win and cries when they lose, and always was a voice of encouragement for the team throughout the season. The two returners, Jeslyn Vang and Lauren Oliver proved to be two of the best setters, servers and passers in the league and were certainly one of the main keys to such a successful season. Together, they received co-M.V.P. (or Most Valuable Player) honors. The setter is perhaps the most challenging and most important position on the floor. It is like the pitcher in baseball, the point guard in basketball, or the quarterback in football. The offense doesn’t run without a good setter and Vang and Oliver were top notch. So for the seemingly inexperienced Lady Roadrunners to boast the 2nd best record in the league for 2009 says quite a bit about the leadership and talent of the two captains, and also says quite a bit about the abilities of the rest of the girls on the team. Congratulations to all of the girls for a fantastic season!!!
